The Good Shepherd Preschool opened its doors in 2020 with just four students. In three years we grew to more than forty students and began our expansion to an elementary school. Highway Christian Academy and the Good Shepherd Preschool are both a ministry of Highway Assembly of God. We look forward to serving you in 2023 & 2024!
Curriculum
Our preschool curriculum fosters learning, builds student character, and teaches social-emotional skills through the use of developmentally appropriate themed centers, challenging lessons, and engaging activities designed to create lifelong learners.
Reading/Writing
Early literacy and writing skills are a daily part of our learning! The students “journal”, color, learn the alphabet in developmentally appropriate cycles, and build foundational reading skills.
Math/Science
Each classroom will use a variety of methods to experience science and math concepts. Including calendar time, sensory bins, experiments and more.
Art
Each classroom has ample access to art activities individually and incorporated in their learning. Students will color, paint, create, and make art daily!
Critical Thinking
We teach problem solving skills, explore all the “whys”, evaluate information, learn from our peers, and practice important skills like spatial reasoning.

FAQ
What preschool curriculum do you use?
We use a combination curriculum that integrates the Bible daily and utilizes Pocket of Preschool, plus alphabet cycles in whole group, small group, and center based learning environments.
How much outside and physical activity time will my child receive daily?
Our classes spend one hour outside or in the gym daily, broken into two sessions. Beyond that the children do music and movement in their classes. Much of their time is spent doing, and very little of their time is spent sitting.
Do preschoolers have rest time?
Yes! Our preschoolers rest or nap after lunch for one hour. Students that do not nap will have an opportunity to work on an activity quietly in the classroom.
What training/education do you require of the preschool staff?
First and foremost, our staff are only offered a postion after they have passed a child abuse and neglect background check and FBI fingerprinting. They are required to be evaluated for fitness of duty before they can work in our facilities and have a TB test. Beyond that, all of our staff must be CPR and first aid trained, complete the Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff – a 10 hour course, recertify annually with the Virginia Health and Safety Update training, and complete 16 hours of professional development annually.
What do I need to enroll?
In order to enroll, you must fill out the registration form, provide a copy of your child’s birth certificate for identification, immunization records, and the VA heatlh form.
